ET review: Sony Ericsson Xperia Active and Xperia Pro

NEW DELHI: Sony Ericsson's Xperia range ofAndroid smartphones have always offered innovative design. Older phones like the Xperia play, Mini Pro and the Arc have each brought in unique design elements. The Xperia Active and Xperia Pro continue the tradition.

Both phones are powered by a 1Ghz processor, 512MB RAM and have 320MB onboard storage expandable via microSD card. Both have 3G, Wi-Fi with hotspot, DLNA, Bluetooth and run the standard Timescape interface on Android 2.3.

THE 'ACTIVE' GENERATION

The Xperia Active is a phone aimed at people who like to stay fit and keep a track of their daily regime. The fitness bug is not new -we've seen the Walkmate app (pedometer & calorie counter) on certain Sony Ericsson phones before. The Active comes bundled with an arm case and wrist strap for ease of use during exercise.

The supplied set of earphones come with detachable ear hooks to keep them in place if you're going for a run. It also comes preloaded with a couple of apps (iMapmyFitness and Walkmate) that keep track of your workouts, calories burnt and nutrition.

From a design standpoint, the Active looks bulky for a touchscreen phone -its 16.5mm thick. This is because it's IP67 certified (military grade) for dust and water resistance. Open the back cover and you'll see another cover underneath which seals off everything from water and dust. Even the 3.5mm headphone jack and microUSB port are covered behind two very secure rubber flaps for protection.

The 3-inch touchscreen is scratch resistant and can function with a wet finger, should the need arise. All these factors combined make the phone great for an outdoors person. The unorthodox shape with the large lanyard slot protruding out from the corner is interesting and thankfully, does not prove to be a hindrance while using the phone.

The front has a glossy finish with the usual touch sensitive Android buttons present below the vibrant 3-inch display. Sony Ericsson has placed the power button on the left side of the phone, while the volume rocker and camera shutter are on the right side. The back panel has a non-slip matte finish which gives a good grip, even with wet hands.

The Active has a 5MP camera with image stabilisation, with some impressive results while shooting images. The video recording quality was a letdown - far too much noise. Battery life was just over a day with around an hour of use while working out, calls, games and music. At over Rs 20,000, the Active is a bit expensive. For a lower price, you can get the LG Optimus Black or Samsung Galaxy S (both with 4-inch displays, 1Ghz processors).

If you need a rugged and water resistant phone, you can look at the Motorola Defy for Rs 14,990 - it has a 3.7-inch display, 800Mhz processor and Android 2.2
